Armchair GM

Since there's not likely to be much Mets news over the mext couple days how about we play a game of Armchair GM? You get to be Omar Minaya for a day and get to make three, and only three, transactions. These can be simple roster moves (release a player), trades, or free agent signings. What would you do? Where would your priorities lie?

You can make any move that has not already been made yet by the Mets but let's, for the sake of arguement, assume that John Franco is already gone (which he probably is, especially after the Mob stories came out) and that any free agent you go after will automatically sign (how about giving the size and length of the contract you offer though).

In a few days, I'll give my three moves. Go to it! Inquiring minds want to know.

1) Decline option on Al Leiter. Old, can't go long enough into a game. We need to start moving on and he is the easiest to move right now.

2) Hire Rudy Jaramillo as head coach. I do this because this would show that Omar has the autonomy that Wilpon says he does and also Jaramillo is Omar's guy. Leyland shouldn't make it through the Philly interview and Backman is getting the Arizona job. Willie Randolph is Fred's guy and the rest are retreads that we don't need.

3) Sign Carlos Delgado(3yrs/30-40mill) option for 4th season. We need that lefty stick, gets on base well, can bat in the 4 hole and Jaramillo being here might attract him as well.

1) Sign JD Drew (5 years, 12 mil/yr.)
2) Sign Derek Lowe (3 years, 4 mil/yr)
3)Trade for Octavio Dotel (not quite sure what it would take, but they are going to try and trade him since he is arbitration eligable)

These are my three most important moves. Of course, this would not be all. I would resign Hidalgo and Benson, sign Steve Kline, let Leiter leave, trade Floyd, and trade for Doug Mientkiewic. However, since we could only do three the ones up there I feel are the most important. JD would feel the middle of are lineup with a much needed bat. Lowe is a low risk high reward kind of guy and can obvisoly pitch under pressure and with Peterson i think he coud be great. Finally, Dotel would really help the bullpen. Thats my three. love to hear what you think.

1B, relief and corner outfield are priorities

1/ Sign Beltran 20 M/ 5 yrs, move Cameron to LF

2/ Promote Diaz and Brazell, decline option on Hildago

3/ Trade Floyd for Dotel

1. Undo the previous GM's idiocy. Tell Benson go get overpaid elsewhere, dump Zambrano on some other sap. While I'm at it, dump Piazza.

2. Sign Beltran.

3. Trade for AJ Burnett or Josh Beckett.

Focus on club's major weaknesses

1) Get two high OBA people for top of lineup to ignite offense. Don't depend on Reyes / Matsui as they are overrated because of low OBA and ruin middle of the line up with their outs.
2) Fix middle relief. Looper was pretty decent and the starters were okay even though they did not produce enough innings. But people like Stanton ruined far too many games. They need strong 7th and 8th inning people.
3) Think long-term. Don't try to win in 05. The NY media and environment forces NY sports teams to have a short-term mentality which prevents proper team building. The Mets should aim to be best club in league by 07 and focus on three year plan. With this in mind, ditching Piazza, Floyd, and not giving long-term contracts to anyone over 30 should better focus the minds (I am not against one year contracts to temporary players like Leiter). The team should throw in 1-2 new people like Diaz they can blossom given a year or two of MLB experience even if the team suffers in 05. No more Zeiles please.
